Man Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 12-Yr.-Old In Hamilton Park2010/11/26
| CityNews.ca Staff A 68-year-old man has been arrested
for allegedly sexually assaulting a child in a Hamilton park.
The alleged attacks happened Oct. 12 and Nov. 23
in Hillcrest Park, according to Hamilton Police.
The investigation began after a 12-year-old girl told her school’s
social worker she’d been attacked twice in the park. Authorities claim the suspect frequently walked his dog “Buddy”
in the same area where the alleged assaults occurred.
On Friday, officers arrested the suspect in the park while
walking his dog.
William Ritchie is facing a total of six charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference
and invitation to sexual touching.

Killing daughter 'like doing dishes' trial hearsBy TAMARA CHERRY, Toronto Sun Last Updated: September 20, 2010 2:37 - Richard Wilde, seen in this file photo, is accused of murdering his eight-year-old daughter.
A North York man who strangled his eight-year-old daughter appeared to believe he did the right thing
nearly two years after he killed her, a psychiatrist testifying in his defence said Monday. Dr. John Paul Fedoroff
told a University Ave. courtroom he was impressed by the "calm, methodical way" Richard Wilde described how he strangled
Megan in her bedroom Oct. 18, 2007. "I was, as a psychiatrist, struck by the affectionate way he described what happened."
Similar to the testimony he gave in his murder trial last week, Wilde told Fedoroff killing his daughter was "like
doing the dishes," in that it was not necessarily a pleasant thing, but something that had to be done, said Fedoroff,
who assessed Wilde in an Ottawa hospital Sept. 19, 2009. "I had this distinct impression that he still believes
that what he did was the right thing," Fedoroff said. It is Fedoroff's opinion that Wilde was not criminally responsible
for the crime. "My opinion is that Mr. Wilde does suffer from a disease of the mind ... That disease caused him
to be unable to appreciate the nature and consequences of his actions," he said. "At the time he committed
these acts, he believed what he was doing was right." Though Wilde said a voice told him it was his daughter's
"time to die," Fedoroff said, "He said the decision to strangle his daughter was his and his alone." Fedoroff
said Wilde spoke affectionately of how he made sure Megan was comfortable before he killed her and that she was wearing a
certain bathrobe -- the same bathrobe from which he used a belt to tie around Megan's neck to make sure she wasn't "resurrected"
after she stopped breathing. It wasn't that Wilde thought Megan was evil or that he was saving her from anything by
killing her, but rather, he just had the sense that it was the right thing to kill her, Fedoroff said. "He's basically
saying, 'Here's what I did, I have no other explanation.' I believe him," Fedoroff said. Wilde suggested that
anyone in his circumstance would have done the same thing, even his wife of the time, Karen, who shook her head in the body
of the courtroom as Fedoroff recalled the conversation. After Wilde killed his daughter, he went downstairs and spoke
to Karen who suggested he have a shower. While in the shower, Wilde contemplated suicide, something Fedoroff described
as "a good example" that "he knew that what he did was illegal." When he appeared clammy after showering,
Karen suggested he go for a walk and they agreed he would buy some ice cream, Fedoroff said. "Instead of going
for ice cream, he drove to the police station and told them that he killed his daughter," Fedoroff said. During
cross-examination, Crown attorney Allison MacPherson suggested the fact that he went to police was proof he was cognizant
of what he was doing when he killed Megan and the fact that it was wrong. "This is the thing: It's not rational,"
Fedoroff said. "At the time he was doing it, he had not even a fully formed thought." Wilde may suffer from
schizophrenia or psychosis, but an exact diagnosis doesn't matter, considering it is clear Wilde "had a psychiatric disorder,"
Fedoroff said. "There's good evidence that he was psychotic at the time he did this," he said. "The
idea of thinking about what he was doing didn't occur to him." There was nothing that Wilde stood to benefit by
killing Megan or by faking symptoms, though faking or exaggerating symptoms may help him explain what happened, Fedoroff said.
"Mr. Wilde has lost everything. He's lost his daughter, his wife, his job, his life and obviously he's going to
need to come up with some explanation for what he did," he said. While "most people who are under stress don't
kill their daughters," people suffering from psychosis are more likely to deteriorate under stress, Fedoroff said. MacPherson
asked Fedoroff whether Wilde suffered from any anger or aggression, to which Fedoroff said, "Clearly he did. He murdered
his daughter." The psychiatrist for the Crown was expected to testify in the afternoon.
Internet sex-lurer spared jail sentenceBy TONY BLAIS, QMI Agency Last Updated: September 18, 2010 6:28am EDMONTON - An Edmonton man who pleaded guilty to Internet luring for having a
sexually explicit online chat with a 12-year-old Ontario girl has avoided being put behind bars. Craig Bartholomew
Legare, a 40-year-old renovator described as the "poster boy" of the Internet luring law due to his case going all
the way to the Supreme Court, was handed a 12-month conditional sentence to be served in the community Friday in Court of
Queen's Bench. Justice Eric Macklin accepted a joint submission for the non-custodial punishment after noting the offence
appeared to be an "aberration" for Legare and was lacking the aggravating factors typically seen in such cases.
"It seems this was an aberration or one-off situation," said Macklin, describing the 2003 sex crime as "one
instance of extremely bad judgment." However, the judge stressed it was still a "serious offence" and
spoke about how computers allow people to "virtually invade homes," which he said is something "parents must
be concerned about." Macklin ordered Legare to be under house arrest for the first six months of the sentence
and placed him on the national sex offender registry for 10 years. He also ordered him to submit a DNA sample for the national
DNA databank in Ottawa. According to agreed facts, Legare admitted he talked dirty with the 12-year-old victim in an
Internet chat room on April 28, 2003. She said she was 13 while he claimed he was a 17-year-old boy. He was actually 32 at
the time. Legare had two sexual chats with the girl that day. The second chat, which was retrieved and preserved by
the girl's father, runs almost an hour and begins with the girl saying, "hey!" and Legare saying, "hi, horny
girl." The chat was almost entirely sexual and included both parties saying they wanted to have sex with each
other. During the chat, the girl gave Legare her phone number and he called her home twice. The second time, he told
the girl he would love to perform oral sex on her. The girl became alarmed and hung up and her freaked-out father contacted
police after learning of the call. Legare was arrested by city police on Jan. 4, 2005. Legare admits he made
no reasonable effort to ensure that the girl was not under 14. However, he claims that he never intended to commit a sexual
offence with her. It is also agreed that he did not make any efforts to meet the girl nor did he intend to do so. Legare
was acquitted of the charge in a 2006 trial, however the Court of Appeal of Alberta overturned the acquittal in 2008 and ordered
a new trial. That decision was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2009. In a decision which drew praise from police, lawyers
and child advocates, Canada's highest court ruled an Internet luring conviction does not require proof the accused intended
to meet the victim or commit another offence. tony.blais@sunmedia.ca
Internet lurer of teen gets five months Markham salesman also gets
probation, spot on sex offenders list By SAM PAZZANO, Courts Bureau Last Updated: September 16, 2010 6:50pm A Markham salesman who tried to lure a 13-year-old girl through on-line messaging was sentenced Thursday
to five months in custody and three years probation. “This crime preys on innocent children and is out of the
reach of public eye and out of the reach of parents,” said Madam Justice Mary Lou Benotto in passing sentence on Suraj
Khera, 32, for luring and invitation to sexual touching. “We are supposed to protect children, not use them for
sexual gratification. He instructed her to use condoms and the morning-after pills,” said Benotto. “Child luring
is a serious offence.” Khera masturbated in front of a webcam and “typed instructions to the person he believed
was under 14 years of age, describing ways for her to touch herself” in February 2007, Crown attorney Mary-Anne Mackett
said reading an agreed statement of fact in May. The victim was actually an undercover police woman posing as a 13-year-old.
She coaxed Khera to show his face on his web-camera. The judge said Khera deserves a more lenient sentence because of
several mitigating factors including his guilty plea in May and his previous unblemished record. He also never arranged for
a meeting with his victim, which separates him from worse offenders who receive longer sentences. Khera also voluntarily
underwent counselling for his crimes while he has been on bail in the last three years, court heard. “Psychiatrist
Dr. Julian Gojer said Khera shows a good understanding of his poor judgment and inappropriate expression of his sexual needs,”
said Benotto. “Gojer doesn’t believe Khera is either a pedophile or hebephile (ages 11-14) and the protection
of the public is not an issue,” said the judge. Khera, who works for his father’s company, comes from a
supportive, loving family, said Benotto. Khera will be listed on the sexual offender registry for 20 years. He is single
and has no children.

Man arrested after teen girl lured on internet Published
On Thu Mar 25 2010 A 21-year-old
Hamilton man has been arrested after a 15-year-old Toronto girl was lured to Hamilton over the internet and forced to engage
in sexual acts. The two met on an internet site about two months ago, said Det. Bryan Grigsby from the Hamilton Police
Service Child Abuse Unit. The girl took a bus from Toronto to Hamilton after the man gave her direction on how to use
Hamilton transit routes and met her at the bus stop near his house, said Grigsby. The man, who police say lied to the
girl about his age, saying he was also a teen, planned the meeting for a time when no one else was in the residence. Shortly
after being in the home the man began engaging in inappropriate and aggressive behaviour, police said, and then forced the
girl to engage in sexual acts for several hours. The girl managed to escape the home and run to a nearby variety store
where she called for help. “Teenagers should be aware about these sites on the internet - there are people out
there that are predators, who provide fictitious information about themselves and their motive is to lure,” said Grigsby.
He also advises parent to educate themselves on and monitor the internet sites their children visit. Marcus
Holloway, 21, of Hamilton has been charged with luring, forcible confinement, choking, assault and threatening with a weapon.

Former church youth worker accused of sex assaultBy DON PEAT, Toronto Sun Last Updated: March 15, 2010 8:49pm A former Whitby church volunteer who worked with kids is charged after a 13-year-old girl told police
she was sexually assaulted. Durham Regional Police said the teen was allegedly attacked Friday. She told her parents
the same day and they called police. Now, police are concerned there could be more victims. The man and girl met
two years ago while the man was serving as a youth helper at Whitby Free Methodist Church on Rossland Rd. near Thickson Rd.,
said police. The man and girl talked back and forth on Facebook and agreed to have lunch on Friday. The two met and,
after lunch, the girl accompanied him back to his office in Oshawa where the alleged assault occurred, police said. Brian
Rate, 52, of Ashdale Cres. in Clarington, is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and indecent exposure to a child.
He was held for a bail hearing. Whitby Free Methodist Pastor Vic Stonehouse said the church is co-operating with the
police investigation. “It’s a tragedy and a lot of people are being hurt by this obviously,” Stonehouse
said. “But there are a lot of people who need support and care, his own family and certainly the (alleged) victim and
her family. “We’re trying to do everything we can to work within the context of a very tragic situation,”
Stonehouse added. Stonehouse, who has been an interim pastor at the church since September, said Rate is still a member
of the church and may have been a volunteer youth helper up to about a year ago. Police said they are continuing to

Man collected child rape videosBy TRACY
McLAUGHLIN, Special to Toronto Sun Last Updated: March 1, 2010 8:32pm BARRIE — A man who collected videos that depicted small crying children being raped was sentenced
to six months in jail, along with an 18-month conditional sentence. However, when given credit for the six months he
already served in prison, Lucas Gannon was released to serve out the rest of his sentence in the community, and he will be
staying at a dorm at the Salvation Army. In a passionate apology to the court, Gannon, 26, of Springwater Township,
said he couldn’t stop himself from viewing child pornography. “I need help,” Gannon admitted, after
pleading guilty to possession of child pornography as well as fraud and extortion. He was also placed on three years
of probation where he must seek treatment and stay away from children under 16. Court heard about his bizarre extortion
scheme where Gannon posed as a buff firefighter and lured an adult woman into falling in love with him over the Internet.
He threatened to post her sexy photographs if she didn’t send him more and more explicit sexual photos and videos of
herself. The woman went to police, who searched his residence, and found dozens of videos and photos of child pornography
on his computer as well as in his photo album. He was arrested May 14, 2009. The videos were viewed in the judge’s
chambers and contained clips of small, naked children urinating or being raped or forced to perform oral sex. “Most
disturbing is one clip of a teddy bear sitting on a penis while the child is performing oral sex,” said Justice Nancy
Dawson as she described the content. “I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t stop,” said Gannon, standing
in the prisoner’s box with handcuffs. “Somehow it got to be younger and younger children. I couldn’t
stop.” Gannon admitted to buying children’s underwear to satisfy his urges, but he insisted he did not take
the child pornography any further than viewing it. “But I know that by viewing it I was harming that child all
over again.” Months after Gannon was arrested, he was diagnosed with leukemia while in jail and he now needs intensive
treatment. “Maybe I deserve this after what I’ve done,” Gannon told the judge. “But what I’m
trying to do is learn about it and get help so that it never happens again.”
Former Toronto cop jailed for sex crimesFemale victims
ranged in age from 5 to 15Published On Wed Jan 27 2010. Bob Mitchell Staff Reporter For eight years, a former decorated
Toronto police officer committed dozens of sexual acts against children and young teens, all of them friends of his young
daughters. On Wednesday, Donald MacCallum paid a price for his crimes. Justice Peter Wilkie sentenced the 53-year-old
to a year in a provincial jail for sexual offences against 11 girls aged 5 to 15 between 1996 and 2004. He will service his
sentence in protective custody. Wilkie rejected the Crown's bid for a two-year sentence and a defence request for house
arrest, telling a Brampton court his “opportunistic” crimes warranted custody. But he said MacCallum’s incarceration
had to also reflect his need for continuing life-saving medical care and his profound remorse. Although the specific
number of incidents remains unknown, Crown prosecutor Toni Skarica said MacCallum committed 80 sexual acts over eight years
against his vulnerable victims. “He used his talents as a police officer to prey on young children. ... There
were multiple despicable incidents,” Skarica earlier told the court. All of the young victims suffered dearly
but one girl's story, perhaps, illustrated just how much he had betrayed her trust and stole her innocence. The Mississauga
girl, now 16, was just 12 when she decided to bring her “Uncle Don” to school for Grade 7 careers day instead
of her Dad. “My father was a successful businessman but there was nothing cooler than bringing an undercover cop
to school,” the girl told the court when she read her gripping victim impact statement. “He was my role model.” But
she had buried a horrific secret, one she had hidden from her parents. She never told anybody her “Uncle Don”
had sexually molested her several times in his Mississauga home when she was 5 and 6. At an earlier sentencing hearing,
some of his victims and their parents described how their once close friend, who attended backyard barbecues and consoled
them during times of family grief, had devastated their lives. MacCallum was a distinguished police officer for 33 years,
decorated for his firearms and extortion investigations. He was once named Toronto’s police officer of the year.
He played key roles in several international gun probes, including infiltrating a Russian narcotics crime group. But
now he is a broken man with life-threatening kidney, bladder and heart problems. He has tried to commit suicide three times.
His marriage of 23 years is over and he has had no contact with his daughters for the past two years. He is also a convicted
sex offender having pleaded guilty in September to 10 counts of sexual interference and one count of sexual exploitation. “I
have ruined countless lives and lost my family and destroyed lives of people involved,” MacCallum said in a statement
filed earlier with the court and read by his lawyer Harry Black. “I constantly think of the nightmares I've caused.
... I can never be sorry enough...” He admitted sexually molesting his daughters' friends at his Port Credit home,
on his boat and in his vehicle while carpooling friends' daughters to various ski hills. Some of his victims still have
nightmares, are afraid of the dark or of being alone. They have trust issues and see his face when they look at other police
officers. The girl who took MacCallum to school for careers day also disclosed what happened to her following an end-of-year
school trip. Her parents were so shocked and disbelieving that they made her “swear on the Bible” that
“Uncle Don” had molested her. MacCallum was arrested in May 2007 for the historic crimes. After his arrest,
other girls went to police. A few parents of his victims knew what he had done but never reported his actions because
they didn't want to ruin his career. Others feared reprisals from fellow officers. MacCallum never had intercourse or
oral sex with his young victims but admitted touching some of their vaginas. He also admitted reaching under their clothing
to massage some of his victims' breasts. He once exposed himself to another 5-year-old girl and touched her vagina when
they were alone on his boat docked in the Port Credit Marina. He initially faced 25 sex-related criminal charges. Another
10 counts of sexual assault were among the charges withdrawn. A parent of one of his youngest victims said no sentence
is enough when it comes to sex crimes against children. “We decided as a family this would be the end. He's going
to suffer a lot with his guilt. It was important he got some jail time.”

Stronach imposter had collection of child
porn picsBy TRACY McLAUGHLIN, Special to The Sun Last Updated: February
25, 2010 10:07pm BARRIE — Naked children, tied up with rope, sometimes
crying, were among the videos police found on the computer of a Springwater Township man, a court heard yesterday. Lucas
Gannon, 26, sat in the prisoner’s box in handcuffs and bowed his head as a police officer described the videos during
a sentencing hearing. Gannon has pleaded guilty to extortion, fraud and possession of child pornography. Court
heard how Gannon, who was slightly overweight, sent a woman in Australia a photo of a buff-looking firefighter, lying that
it was him and stating that he was auto magnate Frank Stronach’s son. He also told the woman that he was dying
of cancer. The two struck up a romantic relationship over the Internet and the woman sent him sexy photos of herself.
Gannon then began to demand more and more sexually explicit photos and then threatened he would send them to her co-workers,
friends and family unless she gave him money. When police launched an investigation and seized his computer last May,
they found dozens of images and videos of child porn as well as a photo album with images of child porn. In court, OPP
Const. Robert Chapman said some of the videos contained bondage, including the one of a young child tied up with rope. “Is
there anything else going on in the video?” Crown attorney Emily Pecorella asked. “You can hear crying in
some of the videos,” the officer said. In most, another language is used and in others, music is dubbed over the actual
voices, he said. The sentencing hearing continues Monday.

Caledon man is facing attempted abduction charges after allegedly trying to lure two 12-year-old Milton girls into his car
Thursday afternoon. Halton police are crediting the father of one of the girls with aiding in the suspect’s arrest. Police
said the girls were in the area of Derry Rd. and Ontario St. in Milton when they were offered a ride by a man around 4 p.m. The
girls declined the ride but the suspect continued watching them from a distance. The two teens rushed home and reported
the incident to their parents. One of the girls’ fathers went to the area and found the suspect, confronted him
and detained him while a neighbour called police. Upon arrival, police arrested the suspect and located some evidence
in the suspect’s vehicle that led them to believe he was enticing the girls into his vehicle for unlawful reasons. Jonas
Anthony Shane Buffet, 40, appeared in Milton court on Friday on the charges of two counts of attempted abduction and two counts
of criminal harassment. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 905-825-4777.

Bolton man charged with voyeurism now charged with possession of child pornPublished On Thu Feb 4 2010 Tamara
Baluja Staff Reporter A 43-year-old Bolton man charged with voyeurism and assault
last July has now been charged with possession of child pornography as well. The charges stem from evidence seized during
the original investigation, said Det. Sandra Staley. “It could be in the hundreds,” Staley said, referring
to the number of victims. “I’m just on the tip of the iceberg and have some 118 DVDs to view.” Domenic
Giorgio was originally charged following a complaint from a couple who were at the accused’s Vaughan comic business
store called Dragon’s Realm. The store, located at 9661 Jane St., just south of Major Mackenzie Dr., is a popular
spot for comic book fans, and also sells bathing suits and Halloween costumes. “The store is surrounded by schools
and is quite close to Canada’s Wonderland, so there is a strong demographic of females who come to this store,”
Staley said. A female victim went into the washroom to try on a bathing suit and the business owner, who was pestering
her to try on the clothing, quickly followed her into an adjoining room, said Staley. Her boyfriend, who thought the
owner’s behaviour was suspicious, went into the washroom to investigate, Staley said. “He thought the owner
was probably just using a peephole to look at his girlfriend, so he searched the washroom and found a fake electrical outlet,”
Staley said. The fake outlet was actually hiding a digital camcorder on a tripod that pointed towards a full-length
mirror in the washroom, she said. “(The boyfriend) ripped out the mini-cassette and had an altercation with the
owner,” said Staley. Staley said the owner is denying the charges and claims that the owner used the camcorder
to prevent theft of his merchandise. In July 2009, Giorgio was charged with two counts of assault and one count of
voyeurism. “But he went one step further and made these DVDs,” said Staley. The DVDs show both the
front and backs of several women in the washroom and the camcorder was used to zoom into certain body parts, police say. Police
have yet to determine how many years of footage are on the DVDs, but say the children appear to be anywhere from 10 to 14
years old. “We have a lot of material to look through,” said Staley. Giorgio turned himself into police
on Thursday morning. A Toronto man also faces three charges in an unrelated child pornography investigation. Kenneth
Garnet Davies, 49, was arrested at a residence in the Sherbourne and Bloor streets area, Det. Paul Krawcyzk said.

O.P.P. Arrest 31 People After Biggest Child Porn Investigation Ever In Ontario
Thursday February 5, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff
The O.P.P. is calling it the largest child porn investigation in the province's history, and on Thursday they revealed
the results of their laborious efforts to protect society's most vulnerable members.
Investigators have arrested and charged 31 people with possessing and making child porn.
They also reveal that two children have been rescued --- a four-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl.
In total 93 charges were laid during the provincewide raids which took place on Wednesday.
"The most fundamental responsibility of any society is to protect children," said Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner
Julian Fantino. "Every child has a right to be nurtured and to be safe. Child pornography is the sexual abuse of children.
These are real children. These are real crimes. These are real victims."
Three youths and a 60-year-old man are among those facing charges, and police say more arrests could be on the way.
"Today is a great day for children and communities right across the province," Fantino added.
"The exploitation of any children by any means is appalling, unconscionable and very serious crime."
